Portvil´s base and our holiday villas: Cala San Vicente

Cala San Vicente (“Cala Sant Vicenç” in Mallorcan), is one of the three urban areas in the municipality of Pollensa. It is the smallest of the three. It stands out for its beaches, which face north-west, the mountainous scenery which is so typical of the Tramuntana mountain range, its relaxed atmosphere and its historical sites. At the holiday villas in Cala San Vicente which we offer you at Portvil you can enjoy a family beach environment with views of the stunning cliffs off the northern coast of Mallorca.

Several beaches to enjoy in close proximity to your holiday villa in Cala San Vicente

Cala San Vicente is the group of beaches most favoured by local residents. Although its name seems to suggest that there is only one beach, and many locals refer to this place as "the cala", Cala Sant Vicente does in fact boast four bays or beaches at which you can enjoy a great swim in the sea. All of the beaches are blessed with crystal-clear water which is perfect for snorkelling in, but visitors must always pay attention to the flags on display to check whether the water is suitable for swimming on each particular day. There are strong currents and northern winds in this area. Cala Barques is the first beach we come across, it is just at the end of the Avenida Cavall Bernat, the main street which takes us to Cala San Vicente. This is a sandy beach, the largest of the group. Despite its proximity to the hotels, there is still an old jetty on the beach and it conserves its old marine charms. Access to the beach is via some steps which also provide access to various restaurants specialising in rice, fish and tapas dishes - their terraces allow you to enjoy a meal with beautiful sea views. Next to Cala Barques is Cala Clara, a very small sandy beach which is surrounded by various hotels.

The next most popular beach in the area is Cala Molins, which you can get to by going down some steps. This is a family-friendly sandy beach, which gets quite busy and features various beach bars around it. It attracts a lot of visitors as there is a free car park just a few metres away. During the summer, Cala Molins hosts markets, concerts and all kinds of exhibitions. From this bay you can also enjoy magnificent views of the "Cavall Bernat", a group of mountains sculpted over the sea with imposing cliff faces. Legend states that the shadow of a horse is projected onto these rock formations.

The last beach in the area is the one known as Cala Carbó. This beach is slightly removed from the tourist hub, and, as it is a rocky beach rather than a sandy one, it is a lot calmer and quieter, even in the busy summer months.

A place to discover

From our holiday villas in Cala San Vicente you will be able to appreciate that "the cala" is the ideal place for taking relaxing walks in nature. For example: near the stream which flows into Cala Molins there is a path which leads into a little forest. This is the so-called camino de Can Botana, a short walk which takes about 20 minutes. If you prefer a walk with views of the Mediterranean, you may like the white caves hike. This route takes you to some stone excavations, where a coastal battery and an ammunition store were meant to be located, to defend the coast during the second world war. The battery was not installed here in the end, but the pathway and the caves guarantee a pleasant circular hike of around 6 kilometres. The views of the sea, the cliffs and Cavall Bernat are stunning. Lastly, we must mention that you can walk from here all the way to the port of Pollensa. Following the path which leads to Cala Carbó, you can then scale a hill with beautiful views of the bay at its peak. It will then take around an hour for you to get all the way to the port of Pollensa, on mountainous terrain, with no trees - so we do recommend wearing appropriate footwear and sun protection.

Cala San Vicente is also home to a few prehistoric monuments. These are the S´Alzinaret caves, a necropolis from the pre-Talaiotic era. The site is very easy to reach - you just need to take the first road to the right once you have reached the main street in Cala San Vicente. The caves are inside a small pine forest (“alzinaret”). The site consists of four burial caves and two caves used as living quarters.

Enjoy Cala San Vicente´s intimate and simple character with a holiday villa

If you would like to rent one of our holiday villas in Cala San Vicente, Portvil reminds you that this area boasts various basic services and facilities, such as supermarkets, bars, restaurants, banks and chemists. There is also a regular bus route which connects the area with Pollensa and its port, a taxi service, and companies which rent cars, bikes and motorbikes in the vicinity. Cala San Vicente is also a great place in which to enjoy diving and snorkelling, and there are companies in the area which organise activities and rent equipment for these water sports. In conclusion "the cala" is a great place in which to enjoy a holiday by the sea and near nature, within a much quieter and relaxed atmosphere than the larger tourist resorts on the island.
