Do you fancy relaxing on holiday during the Easter celebrations? Our holiday villas in Pollensa are the perfect starting point for enjoying a Mallorcan Easter. The municipality of Pollensa welcomes one of the most stand out celebrations and offers an ample variety of choices available for you to enjoy Easter.
Pollensa not only has beautiful surroundings which combine the sea and mountains, but also has a rich culture and many traditions. One of the most popular events is the Good Friday procession, known as the “Davallament del Calvari”, it is also one of the most unique in Mallorca. El Calvari is a mount on the side of the town, located behind the town hall to the north east of Pollensa, where a chapel can also be found with impressive views of Pollensa. The town ascends to the chapel by a staircase of 365 steps which is surrounded by cypresses and three metre crosses.
On Good Friday, after sun down, the procession of “Davallament” is held, where Christ is hung up on the cross before the chapel and is taken to the church of the Mare de Déu dels Àngels, in the centre of the town. The act precedes the recital of the poem ““Processó”, from Miquel Costa i Llobera. Make the most of our holiday villas in Pollensa to enjoy this spectacle. The procession descends down the 365 steps of Calvari lit only by the flame of candles and torches, a journey that is visible throughout the whole valley in which the “brotherhood of the Prohoms” parade in a deathly silence.
During Easter, Mallorcan families traditionally prepare and eat “panades” and “robiols”. The panades are small pasties with a circular base that can be filled with meat, fish or vegetables. The robiols are a small sweet pastry, which are usually filled with jams, angel hair squash or even chocolate. They are very popular dishes and at Portvil we want to recommend going to a bakery in Pollensa or in the port and enjoying one of these typical delights in one of our holiday villas.
On Resurrection Sunday in Alcudia there is an eye catching procession. From our holiday villas in Pollensa you’ll be minutes away from the neighboring municipality. The celebration is known as the procession of the finding and is held during the morning. It represents the meeting of the Virgin Mary and her son Jesus Christ after being resuscitated. The two images of the main stars can be seen again in front of the town hall in Alcudia, a moment in which three jumps are carried out to show happiness and euphoria for the Resurrection.
The Puig de Maria is the mound located in front of the town of Pollensa, on the other side of the town’s main road. At 330m tall, “u puig” can be seen from any location of the municipality. Take a beautiful walk and climb the Puig de Maria. After a light walk you will reach the summit, where you will find a small monastery and an impressive view of the bay of Pollensa. The Monday before resurrection Sunday, the monastery of Puig de Maria and its neighbours welcome a “pancaritat”. It is a meal of the brotherhood where the neighbours of the town share the dishes that they have prepared over Easter and are enjoyed with music and traditional dances.
As you can see, Pollensa offers various options for you to enjoy Easter. Near to our holiday villas you could enjoy the various stand out activities of the Mallorcan Easter and revel in the pleasant Mediterranean climate of our island as spring approaches.
